Makiko Omori

I came to California from Japan, and life in America has made me become interested in cultural identity. I define my identity through my paintings. As an artist, I desire to communicate with people in the West through my work. By injecting my cultural sensibility into Western style Minimalism or Color Field painting, I communicate what it means to be Japanese through my own subtle visual language. I would like to give viewers a calm and meditative experience with my monochrome paintings, using traditional Japanese aesthetics. I use materials from traditional Japanese painting or calligraphy to create a personal style of abstraction, able to bridge yet reference both cultures.
